Judges comments - July/August 2017
'As soon as the canteen opened I told the staff member I had allergies to wheat, tomato and milk and she immediately fetched the chef – a really excellent and friendly guy. In the Food Hall they have a salad bar, hot food and a tastes of the world area with food from different countries. Most foods are gf/df as standard.'
'The chef told me that although the bolognaise is gf and df, it has tomato, so he immediately offered to make me a stir fry, with a choice of soya or chicken, and soya and/or sweet chilli sauce. He also said if I was to eat there everyday they could make sure my food is prepped in an allergy-free area. He cooked in front of me as I watched, and we chatted a bit: he said there are a lot of students with allergies and if they cannot find anything to eat he says 'it is my job to make sure they get something to eat'.
'I felt very confident that the chef and his staff knew what they were doing. The kitchen is completely nut-free and I felt that they could cope with any allergen that was thrown at them!'
'The food was very tasty indeed - lots of soya, peppers, chopped chives, onions, and rice noodles. I was too full for pudding but there was a good selection on offer.'
'They seemed very progressive, open to suggestion, really on the ball. It's all fairtrade, healthy vending, sustainable fish etc – a really high bar. Very impressive in a mass catering establishment.'
